Jonathan Kirshner holds a number of patents—mostly on technology created during his 37 years as a mechanical engineer—but, so far, he has only designed one beverage fountain with a canine bent. The WaterDog makes providing your pooch with a fresh, clean source of water a total snap: read on to learn more about how it came to be, and why your canine shouldn’t be without one, especially in the scorching summer months.  “When my daughter was young, we had two Great Danes, Romeo and Cleopatra, and we lived in a newly built subdivision. One day, I was out walking the dogs—it was really, really hot out, they were panting and we were still more than half a mile from the house—and I turned one of the spigots they have on the housing construction sites for the dogs to drink. They’re lapping up the water, cooling down, and I’m watching, when all of a sudden it occurs to me: How great would it be if the hose turned on automatically so dogs could get fresh, cold water outside?” A mechanical engineer and 35+ year veteran of Coca Cola, Jonathan had developed a lot of beverage equipment, and already held a number of patents, but he’d never designed with dogs in mind before. He built the first device for his Great Danes, but soon enough friends were encouraging him to move his invention into the marketplace. “So I filed for a patent, it was granted, and I developed it with a manufacturer.” In 2003, WaterDog was born. Animal lovers know how important it is to keep their pets cool by having clean, refreshing water at the ready. But after launching his online shop, Jonathan discovered the challenges of marketing his design. “There’s a lot of fear, about waste, about water flowing on the ground.” With that in mind, he created WaterDog with built-in features that take wasting water out of the equation: the technology works by sensing the presence of your pet as it approaches within three feet, while a state-of-the-art microprocessor switches the unit on, allowing the water to flow and your dog to drink. Afterwards, the device automatically shuts off of the water supply. And if you don’t want the Waterdog attached directly to your spigot? No problem. Kirshner also created a remote location kit that allows you to set up WaterDog anywhere in your yard. Following two Fab sales, WaterDog made its way to “Good Morning America,” where it wowed pet owners all over the U.S. As for its designer? “It’s been a good year for Waterdog,” he says—and a good year for our thirsty canine friends, too.
