Patrick Burnell is a pizza freak and artist extraordinaire. His work has a cartoonish, warped feel that is both goofy and disconcerting. We are way into it, and harvested a hot collection of Fab exclusives from his mighty pen.
He will ride miles and miles on his bicycle for a hotdog and he’ll tell you everything you could ever need to know about Japanese metal music and scary movies. Burnell’s work uses surreal imagery, heavy line work, and a melty/warped cartoonish aesthetic. You can see more of his work at patrickburnell.com or follow his process on Instagram and Twitter: @vinyltype
A few questions with Mr. Burnell:
When did you get into making art?
In grade school. My friends and I would have drawing contests and we’d vote on our favorites. Winner got a crisp $2!
Where are you located?
Originally from the Midwest, now I live and work in the mossy land of Seattle.
How did you learn your trade?
The earliest I can remember being interested in art was when I used to trace ‘Where’s Waldo’ pages as a kid. From there I started drawing my own things and have never stopped. I haven’t had formal training, I just did it too much.
Which famous figure, living or dead, would you most love to find out is a fan?
Shaye Saint John (RIP), or John Carpenter.
There are a million other people that come to mind too, but a horribly disfigured half mannequin nightmare supermodel and one of my favorite directors/film composers are pretty much at the top of the list for me.
What’s your vice of choice?
Jeppson’s Malört. That or the Goatsnake burger from Kuma’s Corner.
If you had to lose one of your five senses, which one would it be?
Smell; no contest!
What’s your tagline?
WAY OF THE ROAD
What 3 things would you grab from your workspace in a fire?
LET IT BURN
What’s your favorite travel destination?
South Korea. Those maniacs know how to drop some SERIOUS hog. Wavy central.
If you couldn’t do this, what would be your dream job?
Full time musician. That’s something that’s always been a part of my life and is just as important to me as art. You see the world and show people your passion every night. Hard to beat that.
